Harriet Tubman, born as Arminta Ross was born in Dorchester,Maryland 1820. Born into slavery,as young as age 6 she was working as a fieldhand. .At thirteen she adopted her mothers first name,Harriet.
At thirteen, her mother also taught her how to read, against her masters will. This was a great privilege for slaves. When she asked her master for another book,he threw the book at her and cracked her skull.By age 19,Harriet had aquired many jobs including nurse, cook, and wood cutter. At 23 she met a freed slave, John Tubman. John told about the joys of being free. She made him happy. At 24 they got married.
Now married with two kids, 29 year old Harriet thought about being free. She heard a rumor she was going to be sold. On April 5th, 1849, Harriet Tubman escaped from slavery, leaving behind her parents, husband, and children. 3 days later, she met her brother ata Philidelphia train station. His friend,Tom Hudson had a job for her to work on the Underground Railroad also helped out in other ways.During the Civil War,she worked as a spy, scout, cook, and nurse in South Carolina.
When the Civil War was over in 1901, Harriet had helped slaves escape for 19 years, freeing over 385 slaves including her mom, dad, brother, husband, and kids and none were caught. Harriet opened The Harriet Tubman Home for the Elderly in Albany, New York later that year. She died March 10th ,1913 Albany, New York. On her plaque outside the building is says she is "the Moses of her people".
In my eyes she certainly is.
